Teaching Activities
Jörg Rügemer’s involvement in the field of teaching is an integral part of his design philosophy. He has taught architectural and urban design studios, virtual design studios, and a variety of sustainable architectural and urban design seminars. Schools included the University of Karlsruhe and the Brandenburg University of Technology in Cottbus, both in Germany, where he was the acting chair of Architectural Design and CAD. Furthermore, he taught at Florida International University in Miami, where he served as the Director for Digital Design. He joined the School of Architecture at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 2006, where he teaches design studios and focuses on resilient and sustainable design. Between 2017 and 2020, he founded and directed the new Design+Build Salt Lake program at the School.
Method
Similar to his professional strategy, the most important aspect in his academic work is a holistic, interdisciplinary approach that leads his students to a comprehensive result within each architectural project challenge. Many of his design studios are connected to the exploration of specific research aspects, which help students understanding a multi-layered approach to the concept of space and build work.
Past design studio research included the application of dynamic procedures to architectural design processes, the influence of digital media onto the design process, and the interdisciplinary training of his students with the development of the web-based design studio NetzentwurfTM. In recent years, Jörg focuses on a broad range of projects that explore means of sustainability and resilience in architectural and urban projects within his academic studio setting.
