Kurpfalzachse Mannheim

International Invited Competition and Planning of Mannheim's Downtown Urban Renewal

The commission for the Kurpfalzachse Mannheim and Alter Meßplatz urban redevelopment project through the City of Mannheim was based on the wining entry of the international architectural competition. The winning scheme opened new possibilities and horizons for the development of the Kurpfalzachse area and in particular for the area of the traditional fairground, the Alter Messplatz in the Neckar City. Its further development in 2003 constituted a sustainable basis for the future redesign of the central downtown area and its new plazas and riverside esplanades. The conceptional idea of the project was based on neutrality with regard to flexibility in space utilization and a restraint in the area of design. As an urban strategy, the project proposes a 'calm' design that preserves the prime quality of the open space within the city.
